University Assistant (prae doc) at the Department of Geography and Regional Research

The Department of Geography and Regional Research is part of the Faculty of Earth Sciences, Geography and Astronomy. It is the largest and oldest geography department in Austria with research and teaching activities in human as well as physical geography. The department offers bachelor´s and master´s degree programs, teacher training, and doctorate studies. For further details, please see http://geographie.univie.ac.at/

The doctorate position is assigned to the newly established working group for Population Geography and Demography, which is led by Prof. Dr. Patrick Sakdapolrak. The working group pursues theoretically informed and empirically oriented research at the interface between environmental change and development processes. Human-environmental interaction, North-South relations as well as the linkage between science and practice are core issues of the research work. Regional foci are Southeast Asia, South Asia as well as East Africa.
The doctorate thesis should address the nexus environment and migration.

Occupation group in accordance with collective bargaining agreement: §48 VwGr. B1 Grundstufe (praedoc) with relevant work experience determines the assessment to a particular salary grade. 


Job Description:

  • Development and completion of a Ph.D. (We expect the successful candidate to sign a doctoral thesis agreement within 12-18 months.)
  • Participation in scientific studies and research projects
  • Participation in the preparation of research proposals and acquisition of third-party funding
  • Planning and implementation of teaching courses, supervision of students (participation in teaching and independent teaching of courses as defined by the collective agreement)
  • Integration into the working group, administrative responsibilities and science communication
  • Conducting extensive empirical fieldwork in one of the focal regions


Profile:

  • University Master, or Diploma degree in Geography, or other relevant Social Sciences
  • Background in population geography, migration research, development geography and/ or human-environment research
  • Good knowledge of social science research methods
  • Experience in conducting empirical research (e.g. in the course of the Master thesis)
  • Excellent command of written and spoken English
  • Good command of written and spoken German will be an asset
  • Ability to work in a team
  • Teaching experience will be an advantage
