Spatial data and the methods to process them have been widely developed for more than 20 years. Spatial analysis of population and spatial demography suggest a renewal of classical approaches to demographic phenomena.

The Mediterranean area has been subject to major changes over the past 50 years: decolonization, end of European dictatorships, but also conflicts (in the Balkans, in the near east) and revolutions (Arab spring as the latest one). These radical changes are the result of profound societal transformations, including demographic changes (demographic transition resulting in mortality and fertility decline). While these changes have affected all countries, they have not impacted them evenly. Consequently, population geography need to be revisited, especially at subnational levels.

This lecture will present the original work developed by the Mediterranean demographic observatory. Its international and multidisciplinary team seeks to integrate both spatial and temporal dimensions into demographic analyses. This approach offers a new interpretation of demographic indicators by revealing the various spatial organisations of social phenomena.

We will insist on the data, methods and tools we use to explore demographic changes at a subnational level. Results on different themes (migration, aging, depopulation, feminization) will be presented as an example.

Dr. Habil. Sébastien Oliveau is « Maître de conférences » at the University of Aix-Marseille (France) and joint-director of the research Laboratory ESPACE (CNRS, University of Avignon, Aix-Marseille University, Nice Sophia Antipolis University). He is also associated to the Mediterranean Laboratory of Sociology (LAMES).

He received his Ph.D. in Geography in November 2004 from University Panthéon Sorbonne and his habilitation from Aix-Marseille University in 2011. He also holds a B.A. (1997) and a Master Degree (1999) in Geography and Development Studies from Nanterre University. He has been guest professor at Hanoï University, Vietnam (2012), at Xinjiang University, China (2013) and at Haïti University in Limonade, Haïti (2014). He is currently a guest professor in Vienna University.

He conducts researches in various themes (demography, vulnerability, urbanisation) in different countries (India, Senegal, Mediterranea, France), using spatial analysis methods. In 2010 he co-founded the Mediterranean Demographic Observatory (http:/demomed.org) with her demographer colleague Dr. Isabelle Blöss-Widmer.
